Architecture can be conceptualized as a multifaceted system, encompassing various interrelated components to create spaces that cater to human activities. Traditionally, the architectural conception of buildings has primarily focused on matter and geometry, often relegating energy considerations to a secondary role. Architects typically interpret buildings based on what can be easily represented in drawings or photographs.
The significance of energy in architecture is sometimes understated, as it is challenging to visually represent. However, when the presence and impact of energy become evident in the visual elements and components of architectural design, it becomes a crucial consideration for architects. The integration of energy considerations into architectural projects is essential for creating sustainable and efficient built environments.
A significant portion of ornamental plants commonly used in landscape architectural projects can be substituted with food-producing plants, without compromising aesthetic and environmental effects. In fact, food-producing plants offer similar advantages in enhancing the micro-climate, particularly in arid environments. They provide shade, mitigate the heat island effect, increase relative humidity, and contribute to evaporative cooling—especially beneficial in hot-arid climates.
The visual impact of food-producing plants should not be underestimated, as they can be highly desirable for individuals residing in a desert environment. By integrating food production into various scales, such as inside residential units, in small open spaces between residential units, and within relatively large controlled-environment spaces designed for entire neighborhoods or communities, diverse perspectives and benefits can be achieved. This approach aligns with the author’s proposal in a separate research endeavor, offering a comprehensive exploration of food-production practices across different scales and contexts.
